Bob's Burger, S02E05
Bob decided to get a food truck to compete with all of the other trucks hanging around his restaurant. He intended to just get his old customers back, but the allure of the business on wheels convinced the whole family to continue it to a food festival. Through lies and sabotage, Bob won the prize for the best food truck, but they all had to flee from the backlash from their deception. They barely managed to get out in one piece from the festival full of people at them.
If you could ignore the fact that owning a truck put Bob in more debt than he already was in, I could see his burger truck being the great idea that Randy suggested it would be. After all, no one is ever lining up to eat at Bob's rinky-dink restaurant, so having a mobile business that he could move to places where customers gathered made sense. It also made sense that Bob wouldn't be able to afford an awesome truck with his broke ass. I was amazed that after the first time it exploded that Bob was still able to use it (and drive it) without an immediate second explosion or breakdown, at least. Really, if Bob had waited (or not ran into Randy with all of his "golden" ideas), all the food trucks would have moved along and he would have been back to his small group of customers. But that would make for a pretty boring story.
Even though the kids wrote enough terrible reviews about the other food trucks to drive their customers away and lied about the quality of their own burgers, I still didn't see how they could have won for best truck. Surely Bob's burgers are nothing special. One of his competitors brought up this issue, saying that Bob was the worst with his no frills burgers. I have to agree because if there is a line of food trucks, I'm going to go to the one that has something with a little more to offer than something I could cook up at home. It's true that sometimes simple and old-fashioned is the best, but I think if Bob had that kind of burger he would be able to afford a food truck that provided seats for his children that had non-duct tape seat belts. When is Bob going to do something creative with his burgers? People can get burgers pretty much everywhere in America--you can't really let the burger speak for itself unless it's just made that well. I'd like to see Bob apply some of the cooking skills (I suppose) he has in one episode.
I can't tell if Randy is Bob's friend or enemy, but he sure is annoying. I don't quite remember him from his earlier appearance, but I'm sure it's because I wanted to push him out of my brain. He made fun of Bob for not knowing how the food truck business worked (is that common knowledge for a restaurant owner?) and then urged him to go further with the business. And he's just terrible at the quiet game. The guy just can't shut up. It's too bad that truck explosion at the end didn't blow his head off. That means we have to see him again one day.
Compared to some of Bob's other schemes to improve his business, I liked this one better than most that I can remember. It would have been nice if it provided the kids with enough excuse to run amuck a little more, but I was satisfied with the role they had. Even though it would mess up with the general story of this show, I'd like to see Bob get ahead one day, if not just a little bit. It seems like each episode, he gets a little poorer or worse off than he was before. To keep me believing that someone of his financial standing could stay out of the poorhouse, they need to have a story where he actually makes a decent amount of money. Otherwise, they might as well start making stories where Bob is serving trash burgers from a cardboard box.
