Well, I finally got around to watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta, S04E12. The girls finally make it to Africa! Their flight seems to be pretty uneventful, but I would hope so because the last thing I want to see is a bunch of rich, black ladies getting hauled off a plane and being blacklisted to fly. Of course, they couldn't film too much of the actual flight, but we get to see a little bit of them as they take the 16-hour or so flight.
OK, so what I would like to comment on first is everyone's luggage. I'm not sure what they thought they might be doing, but damn! They each had enough luggage for a small family's worth. They were pushing around these carts with a mountain of bags! They were going to stay for 10 days--not like a month! When I moved to Japan, all I brought was 2 medium-sized suitcases and a carry-on! I know these ladies have some money, but the cost of all that extra baggage must have been ridiculous! And even as much as these ladies love to wear fashionable clothes (and have to be conscious of what they are wearing because they are on TV), there is no need to bring a bag for each day they would be there. It's not like they are going to be making five different wardrobe changes each day. I dunno. Maybe if you fly first class or something, you get to bring however many bags you want (I know that the baggage policy differs). I'm too poor to afford such a thing, so I have no idea.
After they make it through the luggage ordeal (which didn't need to be--haven't they ever been to an airport before??), they get into a van (which has a little trailer in the back with all their luggage and big enough for someone's moving boxes) and head to their accommodations. I suspect that since they were all on a long flight and probably had to deal with a lot of airport craziness with their excessive baggage, the ladies were in no mood to do any drawn-out conversations. However, Marlo takes it upon herself to start talking about dinner etiquette. No one is quite sure why. They have their theories, such as she is adamant about projecting a new image of being classy to overshadow the fact that she has a rap sheet. I figured that she just wanted break the silence because she was uncomfortable and intimidated by being on an overseas trip with people she didn't know. Or maybe she's just a crazy bitch. Not sure, but I thought she was just trying to win their favor by "boasting." It's probably the way she usually makes friends, or people she can pretend are her friends. Certainly she and Nene did not click through that manner, so I don't know why she would try so hard.
Marlo continues to annoy the other ladies with her endless questions and demands when they get to the apartments. I have to say it's a beautiful place they were staying. I can't believe that Marlo doesn't have the decency to keep her opinions about where she would like to sleep to herself since she wasn't originally invited. As a last-minute addition, she should have just been happy that she didn't have to sleep on a couch somewhere. It's nice that they had enough room to accommodate her ungrateful behind.
The next morning I can't help but notice how Nene, Marlo, and Cynthia (the Talls) are all unnaturally dressed up for the meal. While Sheree, Phaedra, and Kandi (the Smalls) are dressed like they just woke up. Granted, most of them are more put together than a regular person would look rolling out of bed, but they at least they had no heels. Just some sweat pants and maybe a tank or shirt. Come on! It's a vacation. Just because you're on TV doesn't mean you have to be fancy all the time! Man, they really cannot be down for just one second. Marlo continues to complain about meal etiquette and how it's unseemly to be passing the food around as they were. Wow, it must be so hard not to have the servants placing each item on your plate. She is one of the most spoiled, yet least hard-working of all the housewives there. I mean, from what I can tell she is just given money and pampers herself. I've at least seen some of the other ladies sweat a bit for their riches. Then she dares complain about not getting the generous and thoughtful commemorative mirror Phaedra gave to the ladies. She didn't know you were coming! What you want her to do--go back in time and order you one too?? Damn, lady.
Something else that bothered me was when they went on their boat ride through the city. Cape Town looks beautiful from the bits they showed us in the episode. However, I didn't even see them take in the sights for more than a few minutes! Like they were much more interested in sitting in the boat and chatting away. Now, I will say that their ridiculous little "hash it all out" session was mostly instigated by Marlo (who doesn't even know a fraction of their relationships between the ladies), but someone could have easily just stopped her and said, "Let's go out and look at the sunset again!" I dunno. Maybe they had dressed too fabulously and couldn't handle the cold weather outside and had to spend their boat ride inside. What a waste! I would have been sucking in all that I could see and taking a lot more pictures. I mean, when are they going to go back to South Africa?
The last part of the episode was basically Marlo being insane and Sheree not wanting to put up with it. Sheree was going to a party, but didn't invite Marlo, so Marlo decided to start an insignificant fight with Sheree. They were just screaming at each other and carrying on for the longest time that I have no idea what they were saying or what they were even fighting about anymore. Nene did uncharacteristically stop all the drama, but Marlo is clearly unstable. She obviously needs to be liked by everyone, even if she doesn't like that person at all. I thought maybe Marlo was just misunderstood, but she lost my favor in this episode. I don't foresee anyone liking her by the end of this trip. And don't think anyone will like Nene any better either since she is the reason they all had to deal with Marlo's insanity on the trip.
Lastly, I just wanna say that I don't know what Nene's problem is with Phaedra. She claims that Apollo is always friendly to her, but Phaedra doesn't even acknowledge her. I think this is all imaginary. Phaedra is the most polite of all the ladies and prides herself on maintaining good relationships. If she's wrong about something, she will go and apologize (unlike most ladies on these reality TV shows). So I just think that Nene never took the time to get to know Phaedra and just assumed that they didn't like each other.
I'm a little worried about what will happen at the end of their trip. Don't want to see Sheree punching the hell out of that brand-whore Marlo. Oh, and Kim's business is pretty boring. I already know she is getting proposed to by Kroy. He's a great guy and they have a lovely little boy together, but I could do with even less of their story than there was in last week's episode. Hope the next episode will as Africa-centered as the last one.
